Membership Requirements & Meeting Information
Membership
Membership is open to residents of El Dorado County. There are
no age or skill requirements, however we are actively seeking locals
with knowledge of our backcountry. Do you ski here? Do you hike
or ride your bike here? We could use your help! We will train
you!
To apply for a volunteer position with Tahoe SAR, please:
- *find the Sheriff's Department in South Lake Tahoe
- request an application for SAR
- fill out the application completely
- return application to the Sheriff's Department
*finding the Sheriff's Office is the first step in becoming
a true Search and Rescue Volunteer!
Our Membership Committee will get in touch with you to schedule
an interview.
**Okay, if you'd prefer, you can download the application.
Requirements for Continuing Membership
In order to become and remain a "Member in Good Standing",
all volunteers are required to complete and maintain training in
the following areas:
- CPR & Basic First Aid (must complete prior to 'fielding'
on any SAR)
- Intro to SAR/OES/ICS
- Equipment Familiarization/Radio Procedures
- Map & Compass/GPS
- Wilderness Survival
- Helicopter/ELT
- Search Management
- Crime Scene/Field Investigation
These classes are provided, free of charge, by the Sheriff's
Department, twice per year, in May and October, in what has been
termed "SAR Academy."
New members may pick up these classes as they become available.
(Check our training schedule). They
must have CPR/First Aid to be fielded, but may not have to complete
all classes before going on their first SAR. Preferably, they will
be fielded with more seasoned members until their classes have been
completed.
Existing members must repeat these classes every two years to
remain current
Other trainings will be provided by individual teams and include:
- Rope/High Angle (ongoing trainings throughout the summer)
- Avalanche/Beacon (Fall/Winter -- everyone must be proficient
in beacon use)
- Snowmobile trainings (Winter, as needed)
- Terrain/Area Familiarization (hikes or skiing or snowmobiling;
year round)
- Telemark Lessons (free access to learn this most efficient means
of winter travel, at Sierra or Heavenly)
Response Requirement to remain a "Member in Good
Standing":
- All members must meet a "Response Requirement". You
must respond to a minimum of 20% of the years' total
SAR's and a minimum of 6 meetings, to be considered a member in good standing.
Even in a volunteer organization, there must be a level of commitment
to 'volunteer'. If you find you cannot make at least 1 SAR every
other month, perhaps you should re-evaluate your commitmment to
SAR and our community. We appreciate everyone's intent to volunteer
their time and efforts in SAR -- we also need to see your smiling
faces in this group effort to provide a safe backcountry experience
for our community and its visitors!
